Laboratory information system

The laboratory, without retyping a single result.

Codon LIS registers the sample with a barcode, receives the results straight from the analyzers over ASTM and HL7, applies the reference ranges by age and sex, puts the biochemist in the verification seat and delivers the report to the doctor and the patient. Biochemistry, immunology and microbiology in one laboratory system, in daily use in laboratories across Kosovo.

The problem

Every retyped result is a delay and a risk.

In most laboratories someone still reads a value from the analyzer screen and types it into a form. The report waits for that person, the number can be mistyped, and nobody can prove afterwards what the analyzer actually said. Codon LIS removes the retyping, not the biochemist: the result arrives by itself, the verification stays with the person who is responsible for it.

How it works

  1. 1

    Registration and barcode

The patient is registered once, the sample gets a barcode label, the order goes to the worklist of the right analyzer.

  2. 2

    The analyzer sends the result

Bidirectional over ASTM E1381/E1394 or HL7 v2.x: orders out, results back with flags. Devices without a standard interface are bridged.

  3. 3

    Reference ranges and checks

Ranges by age and sex are applied automatically; out-of-range values are flagged and compared with previous results.

  4. 4

    Verification

The biochemist reviews and releases. Nothing reaches the doctor or the patient before that step.

  5. 5

    Report and delivery

PDF report, SMS or e-mail notification, fiscal receipt, and the result in the patient file the doctor has open.

What it includes

The modules inside

What it does for you

  • Bidirectional analyzer integration over ASTM E1381/E1394 and HL7 v2.x: orders go out, results come back.
  • Worklists per analyzer and per bench; barcode labels printed at registration.
  • Reference ranges by age and sex, flags for out-of-range values, delta checks against previous results.
  • Verification step by the biochemist before anything reaches the doctor or the patient.
  • Microbiology: cultures, antibiograms and free-text findings in the same report.
  • PDF report, SMS or e-mail notification and fiscal receipt from one screen.

Modules

Laboratory

Biochemistry, immunology, pathology

Processing and management of medical analyses: sample registration with barcode, results per patient, reference ranges applied automatically by age and sex, verification before release.

LIS

Analyzer integration

Automatic upload of results from laboratory devices: analyzers, workstations and peripherals in one network, so nobody retypes a result.

Microbiology

Cultures, antibiograms, resistance trends

Cultures and antibiograms per patient, with results classified as sensitive, intermediate or resistant, and resistance trends by region, age group and antibiotic.

What the studies show

The problem is not only paper. It is every step where a result is copied, identified or verified by hand.

≈70% of medical decisions are influenced by laboratory tests CDC, Laboratory Week
≈10% error rate in laboratory results entered by hand (8.8–10.2%) Black et al., Anaesthesia 2004; Mays et al., JAMIA 2019
60–70% of laboratory errors happen before the analysis itself Wilton & Pennisi 1994; Nordin et al. 2024
−54.5% laboratory turnaround time (TAT) after digitalising the workflow Mekhjian et al. 2002
−49% duplicate laboratory orders after digitalisation JAMA Network Open 2019
−40% duplicate radiology orders after digitalisation JAMA Network Open 2019

Frequently asked questions

Which analyzers can Codon LIS connect to?

Any analyzer that speaks ASTM E1381/E1394 or HL7 v2.x, which covers the common biochemistry, haematology, immunology and urine analyzers. Send us your device list and we confirm each model before you sign.

Can we use Codon LIS without the hospital system?

Yes. The laboratory package is Codon LIS with patients, appointments, payments and reports, sized for a private laboratory or a laboratory network.

What happens to the results we already have?

They are migrated with Codon Migration, included in the subscription, so the patient history starts complete on day one.
